Hilton Head Island has miles of Pathways. They are for walkers and bicyclists.
There are some 64 miles of public pathways and nature trails. That is not counting the bike paths inside the plantations.
There are maps along the paths letting you know where you are and where you can go.

This kiosk is at the circle where Squire Pope Road meets Gumtree Road.
This map gives you a choice of two accessible Pathway Routes.
The Island History Pathway Route brings you by places with local history, including the Island’s place in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. There are information signs along the way.
This map brings you to the public beaches.
You can also ride your bike on the beach. The sand here is hard enough so that you don’t flounder like you would on a lot of other beaches.
The Pathways go to Hilton Head Island parks. Most parks have public restrooms.
You cannot use Hilton Head Island Pathways with anything that has a motor. You cannot ride a horse on the Pathways.
Prohibitted:
- Motorcycles, motor-assisted bicycles such as mopeds, motorscooters, golf carts, lawn mowers, all-terrain vehicles, go-carts, or any other similar, small motorized vehicles.
- Horses or any other large animals, except for small pets such as dogs and cats on a leash.
- Surreys and other types of carriages.
